Curious if You Are Ready to Work with an Interior Designer? Keep Reading...
Hiring an interior designer isn't for everyone, and that's okay. I tell people it's a helpful luxury. I have many clients with great design sense but zero time to manage the project. I have other clients who don't know exactly what they want, and are happy to hand over the design process and management to a professional for a done-for-you experience. I always ask potential clients what they are hoping to get out of the experience and if they are ready to invest in the project for the design and the furnishings.
Do You Know What You Want & Can You Articulate That?
It's important to let your potential designer know what you want the completed project to look and feel like. If you can't articulate it, images help a lot! Overall goals for how you are going to use your home, or vacation home is important. Do you need to host multi generational families? Are you a growing family? Do you plan to age in place? Anything that impacts your living situation and use of the house is important.
Are You Prepared to Invest Wisely & Practice Patience?
Generally, a quality interior design plan does not happen overnight or within a tightly edited half hour HGTV show. It takes time to pull samples and materials together from furnishings that will meet your budget and quality desires. Great quality furniture takes time to produce, especially if you enjoy custom selections to make your home unique. You must be open to a longer than expected time frame and comfortable talking about your furnishings budget. This is a long term investment in your home.
Do You Love to Delegate & Trust Others with the Details?
As I mentioned before, I have some clients with incredible taste, yet they still hire an interior designer because they choose to delegate the design and implementation to a professional. Pulling together design ideas, samples, tracking orders, dealing with "issues" and overseeing the installation of furniture is not how they want to spend their time. Great clients trust that their interior designer will bring exciting ideas to the table and be able to implement the design to completion without them having to get involved.
Full service interior design is really for someone who is comfortable handing over the reins to a professional designer and happy to be on the receiving end of design presentations and done-for-you interiors.
